About: devbits.net
Background
Back around 2001, I started a site as a platform to host scripts and applications written by myself and some friends for the MSN and IRC chat networks. Doing this sparked an interest in web design, I started to study mostly HTML, PHP & JavaScript in addition to some other languages, and as I learnt enough around a given subject, I started writing about the basics in the form of tutorials and including them on the site.
A year or so later, the geeky IRC stuff went, and the geeky web stuff increased. Initially, a collection of web design and development articles, tutorials & code examples. Later came some standards compliant web templates, various files and resources. This is pretty much the site you see today.
This site also hosts a feed and database of the most viewed entries from the Open Source Vulnerability Database from 2004 onwards, and a working replication of the PHP manual for function lookup - http://devbits.net/{function} eg: /include.
About Me
DevBits is essentially my little playground on the web. Day-to-day I work as an IT solutions consultant for a fortune 500 company, and my involvement with websites in my working life doesn't touch the areas of website design and development, only the infrastructure that keeps them running.
I am a strong supporter of web accessibility and a volunteer at the Fix The Web project. To help keep my interest in web development, if you are developing a non-commercial site and struggling in any of the areas covered in the articles, tutorials etc. feel free to contact me and time permitting, I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can offer any guidance.
Design and Future Development
The past few years have not allowed much time to write and update content. Some of it is a little out-of-date and there are some unfinished pages to complete and include. I am also near to completing DevBits 'V3' which is the second major revision of this design and addresses some accessibility issues, mobile access and some general bug fixes.
Credits
DevBits is run on PHP, MySQL and the Apache HTTP Server. Developed and edited with Bluefish and hosted by UnitedHosting
